A special issue on the SMOS mission has just been published in this IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, vol. 50 it is now available on-line. It presents first scientific results, more focusing on the calibration and validation of the SMOS data and the improvements to the retrieval algorithms to achieve the mission objectives, also giving an outlook to the applications ahead.
